Engineering Manager

Engineering Manager

New York City, NY

What is Coast

At Coast, we're building the financial infrastructure powering America's fleets.

Founded in 2020, Coast has become the payments and expense management platform of choice for the 500,000 fleets and 40 million vehicles that keep the country moving — giving fleet owners and operators control, visibility, and trust over how their businesses spend.

Simplicity is our competitive advantage. In an industry where complexity is the norm, we're building something opinionated and focused: software that field workers and fleet managers actually want to use. Every member of our fully co-located team is a builder who cares deeply about bringing modern, well-crafted tools to the trades — an industry that's been underserved for too long.

About the Role

We're hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a team of engineers focused on increasing the number of fleets on the Coast platform. You'll partner directly with Product and Design to ship high-impact capabilities that move critical business metrics.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll set technical direction, coach engineers by engaging with their real work, lead by example, and raise the bar on how the team operates. You will have the opportunity to help shape a fast-growing engineering organization.

Coast is an in-person company, with flexibility to work from home ~1 day per week. This role is based out of our New York City office. We believe great products are built by people in the room together, collaborating closely, moving fast, and pushing each other to raise the bar.

What You’ll Do

Own delivery for your team — keep engineers unblocked, motivated, and focused on the work that drives Coast forward.

Partner with Product and Design to drive measurable business outcomes by defining and shipping the best-in-class fuel and fleet spend user experience, and public APIs

Provide technical leadership by engaging with architecture, implementation, and engineering fundamentals.

Coach and develop engineers through close attention to their actual work.

Build AI fluency across your team, modeling its use in your own workflow, setting expectations for how engineers engage with AI-assisted development, and identifying where AI features can create durable product leverage for Coast's customers.

Build a healthy, high-performing, inclusive team culture, and hire in a manner that perpetuates excellence.

What success looks like in 6 months

Your team ships predictably against clearly defined roadmap commitments.

The business metrics owned by your team are tracking at or above projections.

You have re-engineered how software gets built so AI becomes part of the operating model; code production, review, testing, and delivery are meaningfully restructured around it.

There is a high degree of trust and clarity within your team and amongst its stakeholders.

You have grown at least one engineer into a tech lead role

What we’re looking for

4+ years of success managing engineers, with a track record of growing engineers to the next level.

8+ years in web systems development.

Strong technical judgment: making sound architectural decisions, managing technical debt, and upholding high engineering standards.

Hands-on experience implementing AI-driven features in production.

Experience developing AI fluency in engineering teams.

Excellent communication: you understand that effective communication is critical to success and you translate technical concepts clearly for diverse stakeholders and keep projects moving.

Proven experience hiring and developing talent.

Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort working in an early- to mid-stage startup environment where ambiguity and pace are part of the fun.

What we offer

A leadership role where you'll own a core part of our product, set its technical direction, and see your decisions reach thousands of customers.

Competitive salary ($230,000 - $250,000 USD) and equity

Company-sponsored 401(k)

Medical, dental, and vision insurance

Flexible paid time off (vacation, personal well being, paid holidays)

Paid parental leave

$400 accessories allowance (a keyboard, mouse, headphones, etc.)

Education stipend

Tools to help manage your financial wellness, including webinar, and access to an equity tax advisory service

Free lunch on Fridays

Coast is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are building a diverse and inclusive environment, so we encourage people of all backgrounds to apply. We’re an Equal Opportunity Employer and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, religion, disability, national origin, protected veteran status, or any other status protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.

Learn how we think

Fleet payments and embedded fintech done right podcast episode with our founder and CEO, Daniel Simon

Fueling the Financial Operating System for Fleets: Our Partnership with Coast ICONIQ Series B blog post
